Velocity-tuned resonances between different ground-state sublevels in two (σ+ and σ- polarized) standing waves

Abstract

We demonstrate the existence of velocity-tuned (Doppleron) resonances in two σ+- and σ--polarized standing waves, between the two ground-state sublevels of a A-type system. We derive the resonance conditions, and the properties of these resonances. We show that fast population transfer between these states may take place, while excited atomic states are only marginally populated. We derive an interesting dependence of the transfer time on the relative spatial phase of the two standing waves.
