Abstract

Glomerular filtration rates (GFR) and tubular functions were measured in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA was characterized by severe acidosis (pH 7.15 ± 0.08) volume depletion (2.8 ± 0.3l/1.73 m2), hyponatremia (130 ± 1.4 mmol/l) and highly elevated blood glucose concentrations (30.3 ± 12.3 mmol/l). Our data indicate that GFR was reduced at the onset of DKA, however, it recovered after 12 h. Urinary β2-microglobulin excretion and tubular phosphate reabsorption offer the most valuable information for the investigation of tubular function.
