Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy of unstable nitrile oxides

Abstract

HeI photoelectron spectra are reported for unstable nitrile oxides XCNO, X = ONC-, NC-, Cl-, Br- and H3C-, generated for the first time in the gas phase from stable dihaloformaldoxime and disubstituted furoxan precursors. Single wavelength photoionisation mass spectroscopy is utilised for species identification. Assessment of the sequence of cationic states is made in the context of known data for the parent HCNO molecule, thereby providing an assessment of substituent effects.
