Ultrastructural localization of acetylcholinesterase in the cerebellar cortex with special reference to the intersynaptic organelles

Abstract

Ultrastructural investigation of the synapse indicates that intersynaptic organelles connect prewith post-synaptic structure. These elements may provide a functional continuity between neighbouring neuronal structures, divided from each other under resting conditions. Electron microscipic localization of AChE revealed the exact sites of this enzyme in the cerebellum. AChE located on neuronal surface membranes and on the intersynaptic organelles is obviously active in the hydrolysis of ACh.
