Two-dimensional polymer of C60

Abstract

We suggest that the rhombohedral phase of C60 obtained by Iwasa et al1 by high pressure synthesis is a two-dimensional polymer. The structure can be described by the same type of bonding as it was found in the polymer chains of A1C60 (A-K,Rb,Cs). The two-dimensional network of bonds leads to a 5% deformation of the molecule in the perpendicular direction which is essential in describing the x-ray data. This two-dimensional polymer is of particular interest for future doping experiments and can be related to intercalated graphite.
