Abstract

In the presence of RuCI2(PPh3)2 1,3-dioxolanes and 1,3-dioxanesreact with alcohols R1R2CHOH (R1 = R2 - alkyl or H) to give 2-R1,R2-1,3-dioxolanes and 2-R1,R2-1,3 dioxanes, respectively, with practically 100% selectivity. This paper discusses the reaction route of the transacetalization and the role of the catalyst.
