Transformation of 1,3-diols on homogeneous and heterogeneous rhodium catalysts

Abstract

The dehydration of various aliphatic 1,3-diols involving oxo compound formation has been studied in the vapour phase at 250 - 300 °C on Rh/Al2O3 and Rh/Cab-O-Sil catalysts, and in the liquid phase at 100 °C in the presence of RhCl3/PPh3. Mechanisms of oxo compound formation have been investigated and compared. It has been established that the transoformation proceeds in the same manner for both catalyst types, via dehydrogenation/hydrogen transfer and dehydration reaction steps.
