Abstract

Based on MEDLINE database search, a selection from the international literature has been compiled and focussed on controlled clinical studies on tibolone, a new drug for hormone replacement therapy. The critical analysis of 167 publications has proved that the new compound, tibolone and its three active metabolites exert tissue-specific weak progestogenic, androgenic and estrogenic actions in menopausal women beneficially acting on the pathologic symptoms and metabolic disorders, thus serving the health and improving quality of life of aging women. Due to its favourable effects, few side effects and expectedly better compliance of the users, tibolone can be a viable alternative to the traditional hormone replacement therapy.
