Thoracic radiography is commonly used in case of differentialdiagnosis of respiratory or other thoracic diseases. To perform it a correctlypositioned and good quality image is basic for further evaluation. The positionof the animal, the phase of respiration, the focus direction, the used exposition values, films and grids all influence the image quality. Theradiographic signs of the different respiratory diseases are non-specific, whichmeans that different thoracic alterations can result in similar radiographicchanges and the same thoracic alteration can lead to different radiographicappearance. The subjectivity of the observer, which is supported by experience, also plays an important role in the evaluation. The authors review theliterature of the thoracic radiography of foals. The technique of the radiography and the criteria of the image evaluation is summarized and sometypical alterations and pattern types are described with the help of clinical cases and corresponding images.
