Third-order theory of asymmetrized quadrupole lenses

Abstract

Potential distribution and focusing properties of asymmetrized quadrupole lenses with different electrode configurations are treated in third order approximation. The general properties of the field deduced from this treatment completely agree with the data measured in an electrolytic trough. Aberrations induced by the asymmetrization are shown by a numerical example.
