THERMOPOWER METHOD FOR DETECTING THE FERRITE-AUSTENITE TRANSITION: APPLICATIONS TO SURFACE REACTION AND DIFFUSION.

Abstract

Specimens of pure iron were used for analyses. A method is described for monitoring the ferrite-austenite transition. The presented applications link distant fields and the method may be useful in a wide range of problems, since the ferrite-austenite ratio is an important parameter in several metallurgical processes. Using the results of thermopower measurements, equations are presented for the calculation of the carburization and decarburization rate constants for iron-carbon and iron-titanium-carbon alloys. There follows a model which enables diffusion constants to be calculated.
