Abstract

In connection with the examination of five 'hairy cell' leukemic cases, ultrastructural alterations were reported by the authors. They succeeded in identifying the 'hairy cells' in every case. The ultrastructure of 'hairy cells' was similar in the spleen and in the peripheral blood. In two cases the 'hairy cells' showed ultrastructural changes of complex nuclear bodies and cytoplasmic inclusions with tubuloreticular structure. In one case the granulocytes and their precursors showed ultrastructural changes suggesting malignancy. The authors state that the electron microscopic investigations are not satisfactory in detecting the origin of the 'hairy cells' but may be of some help in the recognition of the pathological cells.
