Abstract

The synthetic routes of polyester preparation with main monomer malic acid and special comonomers are summarized. Polyesters could be synthesized via biological way (the purification of the product is not simple) and in chemical reactions, which follow two basic routes. One is when poly(malic acid) is formed in a series of reactions through polylactons. Because of the numerous reaction steps, the yield is very low. The other chemical method is the thermal polycondensation in the presence of catalyst. Its advantage is the simple synthetic route and the high yield. The use of comonomers is due to several requirements. First, when the number of OH group is increased, the molecular weight could be tailored. Secondly, with the presence of comonomers the application possibility of the polyesters could be increased dramatically. Several characterization methods are discussed that give information about the polyesters. The homo- and copolyesters undergo hydrolytic and enzymatic hydrolysis; the result is the presence of monomers that can exert their influence. These homo- and copolyesters are biodegradable and bioabsorbable, and attracted attention for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications (drug carrier, tumor targeting, pH sensitive agent, nanoconjugate etc.). The combination of the comonomers improve not only the physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics, but broaden their use e.g., in drug delivery systems, in chemotherapy etc. The chapter presents several examples for the combination of comonomers and gives a detailed survey on the application possibilities of homo- and copolyesters used in biomedical field.
