The structure of ferrofluids in the vicinity of an interface with silicon

Abstract

Neutron reflectometry and off-specular scattering is used for studying the ordering in colloidal solutions of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in the vicinity of a flat monocrystalline silicon wafer. The experiments reveal layering whose morphology and kinetics depend strongly on the colloidal parameters and the applied magnetic field.
