The problem of anomalous near surface diffusion

Abstract

Anomalously fast and slow diffusion perpendicular to the surface in the near surface region of solids have been reported in the literature. The possible reasons of the anomalies are discussed. A simple model is solved to show the effect of the driving force due to surface-free enthalpy excess.
