The possibilities of electron microscopic tracer techniques in the demonstration of hypoxic heart muscle

Abstract

Effects of intermittent hypoxia on the integrity of the myocardial sarcolemma and on the mitochondrial membrane were studied. The degree of membrane degeneration correlated with the increase of the tracer in the intracellular space. The different tracers are sensitive indicators of any alterations in membrane permeability. The ferritin, ruthenium red, lanthanium nitrate methods were investigated. The mitochondrial membrane is more sensitive to hypoxia than the sarcolemmal membrane. A dialysis concentrate from deproteinized calf blood, Solcoseryl(R), has a stabilizing effect on the membrane as well as the capacity to prevent any pathological increase of membrane permeability.
