Two progestational steroids have been observed in the ovarian venous blood of non-pregnant rats: progesterone and 20α-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one. Both compounds are secreted in all phases of the estrous cycle. The highest level was observed in the diestrus and the lowest in the estrus state. The proportion of 20α-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one to progesterone shows a peak in the proestrus and estrus phases, which may be regarded as a consequence of altered 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in the ovarian tissue.
