Abstract

Basing on the clinical course of 206 patients with interstitial lung diseases, the value of various methods in the diagnosis of diffuse, disseminated lung alterations, as well as reasons for the failure of corticosteroid therapy, are assessed. The applied radiologic, respiratory and laboratory methods are of rather low sensitivity and specificity, and the same can also be said of the biopsies performed at a late stage. The basic reasons of failure in therapy are the late detection of the pulmonary fibrosis stage, and the delayed initiation of adequate treatment.
