The interaction of barium titanate with an aqueous suspending medium

Barium titanate powders suspended in water release Ba2+ ions. It is shown that their source is probably barium carbonate impurity, rather than the barium titanate surface. In contrast, sintered discs of barium titanate release Ba2+ by selective dissolution, and a surface layer up to 20 nm thick becomes significantly deficient in barium.
