The growth of Al2Au crystallites on Al{111} films

The formation of Al2Au alloy has been observed during the deposition of gold onto {111} surfaces of freshly prepared aluminium polycrystalline films. The Al2Au crystallines grow epitaxially with two different growth morphologies and orientations. One type exhibits layer-by-layer growth resulting in thin crystals and the other type consists of Al2Au tetrahedra with their vertices penetrating into the substrate crystal. They also have different orientation relations and interface structures. It is concluded that the geometrical misfit alone does not determine the epitaxial orientation relation between the substrate and the overgrowth.
