In 120 of the 500 cases diagnosed clinically as leukoplakia histologic examination revealed epithelial dysplasia (24%). The dysplasias were graded as mild, moderate and severe, and connections were searched for between the age, and sex of the patients and the clinical type and localization of the disease. The frequency of dysplasia was higher in the erosive type of leukoplakia. Severe dysplasias could be found in the highest rate on the tongue and lower lip. The follow up of 68 patients showed in 9 cases (13.2%) after, on the average, 6.3 yr delay, carcinomatous degeneration.
