The fractal nature of vegetation and the species-area relation

Abstract

To derive the well known species-area relations one assumes that the total number of individuals is proportional to the area belonging to the regarded organisms. This paper modifies the above relation using the fractal nature of vegetation and the allometric relation between the number of individuals (in a given area) and body length. Thus the total number of individuals scales allometrically with the given area, and the power, which is a function of the fractal dimension, generally differs from one. The empirical estimates are compatible with the theory in a wide range.
