The exchange of 54Mn and 45Ca ions on montmorillonite

Abstract

The interfacial reaction between calcium-montmorillonite and the manganese ion is studied by a radioisotopic tracer method. At high manganese concentration an expression for the sorbed manganese is found, which indicates a small extent of adsorption. A relation is found for the separation of ion exchange and adsorption. The derived equation was found suitable for use in the calcium-montmorillonite-manganese ion system. A similar equation can be applied for the exchange of three ions.
