The Effect of Sintering Atmosphere on the Phase Composition and Strength of Silicon Nitride

Abstract

Three procedures were attempted for examining the effect of atmosphere of sinter-HIP process on the properties of silicon nitride-based ceramics with 0-15 wt % aluminium nitride, 2-12 wt % alumina and 4-6 % yttria. Weight loss, density and room temperature bend strength data of samples in the top and inside of crucible, or embedded in different powders or pressure sintered in different processing gases were compared. The obtained results can be explained by considering the variations of the local atmosphere around the samples and that of the liquid phase among the particles.
