Abstract

Quantitative MR morphology were done by the authors on the subchondral bone volume of the navicular bone on 18 cadaver limbs, derived from adult warmblood horses (3-14 years of age) to determine whether there is any connection between the ratio of the spongy and compact bone volume and the existence or the lack of degenerative changes at the same area. The images were made with a 1.5 Tesla Siemens scanner in a CP-Helmholtz circular coil. For the quantification T1 spin echo sequence in sagittal plane, to determine the degenerative changes spin echo, gradient echo and inversion recovery sequences were used in sagittal, transversal and coronal planes. The ratio between the volume of the compact and spongy substance of the navicular bone varied between 1.16-1.74. The mean value was 1.41. In the cases where the ratios were smaller than the average degenerative changes were rarely diagnosed (2/12 limbs). In the cases where the ratios were greater than the average the opposite result was found (2/6 limbs) but there was no significant difference between the two groups by statistical analysis.
