Temperature dependence of the Pauli susceptability in liquid Ni-B-P alloys

Previous experimental work has indicated that for liquid Ni81.5B18.5-xPx alloys (0≤x{slanted equal to or less-than}/18.5) the magnetic susceptibility χ and its temperature derivative dχ dT depends on composition but in an opposite sense: χ decreases whereas dχ d dT increases from x=0 to x=18.5, the slope dχ dT even changing sign at an intermediate composition. In this work, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and its connection to the thermal expansion is discussed within the Stoner model. By taking into account (i) the explicit T-dependence of the Fermi function, and (ii) the volume dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level and its variation through thermal expansion, the observed trend and the sign change in the composition dependence of dχ dT is explained qualitatively for the liquid Ni-B-P alloy series.
