Abstract

There are many sources affecting the time resolution of a large area single gap RPC, the dominant one being the position dependent gain. There are several reasons for this gain variation, e.g. variation in the gas composition due to improper flow and leakage of gas, variations in the thicknesses of glass, button and spacer, etc. In the current work, the technique of offline time correction is presented using which time resolution of better than one ns can be achieved. The technique has been applied on the cosmic ray data collected in the 1 m m RPC stack at TIFR. A few alternate solutions to improve the time resolution during the operational phase of INO-ICAL experiment are also discussed in this work. All the results presented are not only valid for the INO, but for any experiment using the single gap large RPC detectors.
