Abstract

Prognosis of brain tumors is very poor, especially for glioblastoma, the most frequent malignancy in the central nervous system in adults. The only hope for curative treatment is surgery, however only in few cases, while radio- and traditional chemotherapy have limited value. In the past years different molecular changes were discovered and used as predictive markers (e.g. 1p/19q co-deletion, MGMT methylation) for drug sensitivy, or as targets for therapy. Most of these targeting agents failed to act efficiently in monotherapy. It seems to be a better approach to apply combinations and/or multitargeting agents. Some encouraging activities were achieved by anti-angiogenic drugs. The attempts to find the most appropriate schedule for the individual patient the studies on the gene or miRNA expression profiles raise some hopes.
