Synthetic polyolefins from waste polymers.

Abstract

Olefin containing hydrocarbon mixtures were produced from agricultural polyethylene sheets by a mild thermal degradation process. After refining and fractionation the olefin content of the mixtures was oligomerized in the presence of a cationic catalyst based on AlC13. Correlations among the composition of the raw olefin mixtures, the parameters of the oligomerization and the properties of the oligomers were studied. It was found that the molecular mass distribution and hence the properties of the oligomers could be altered within wide ranges by changing the parameters of the oligomerization and properly selecting the olefin containing mixtures to be used. The results can be of use in estimating the properties of synthetic oils to be produced by the hydrogenation of these oligomers.
