Abstract

The melt polycondensation of D,L-lactic acid was studied by 1H-NMR and MALDI-TOF MS method at temperatures ranging from 100°C to 220°C. At low temperature, i.e., up to 120°C linear, and at higher temperature both linear and cyclic oligomers were formed. It was shown that the synthesis of linear polylactic acid can effectively be achieved and the reaction time can considerably be shortened upon microwave irradiation. The molecular mass range of linear polylactic acid obtained is 500-1000 g/mole by MALDI MS. It was also shown that MALDI MS is capable of detecting both linear and cyclic polylactic acids.
