Abstract

1‐(2‐Hydroxyethyl)‐2‐methyl‐5‐nitroimidazole (1) reacts with haloalkyltrialkylsilanes [Hal(CH2)nSiMe2R] to give 4‐nitroimidazole derivatives 3 and acetaldehyde. This process involves at least two reaction steps, N‐alkyl quaternization and elimination of the hydroxyethyl group. (Formula Presented.)
