Abstract

Over a period of six years, 258 patients underwent chronic hemodialysis in our institution. Pericardial effusion was detected by means of echocardiogrphy in 48 of these patients. A pericardial window was surgically created in 24 cases. This intervention was performed in patients with evidence of pericardial tamponade but also if the effusion increased or persisted for several weeks. There was no surgical mortality. Neither did the effusion recur if suction was maintained for over 24 hours postoperatively.
