Surface characterization of rapidly solidified aluminium alloys containing iron

Abstract

Rapidly solidified binary (Fe, Mn) and ternary (Fe, Mn, Mg) as melt spinned, further melt spinned and heat treated aluminium alloy ribbon surfaces were studied by depth profiling XPS and SIMS. At the ribbons without heat treatment in the outermost part of the oxide layers one part of the Fe and Mn content (approx. 10%) was found in form of oxide while in deeper layers most of the Fe and Mn appeared in metallic form. Due to heat treatment the Fe content of the surface layers transformed completely into the oxidized form of Fe. The Mg content of the oxide layers was detected in oxide and carbonate state.
