Abstract

Styrene/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDM) copolymers were synthetized in toluene initiated with 0,01 mole % of AIBN at 60°C. The monomer feed was varied in the range of 10-55 mole % for EDM. The copolymerization was stopped before gelation and stamples were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy and DSC measurements. Compositions were determined and reactivity ratios were found to be r1 = 0,407 ± 0,057 and r2 = 0,90 ± 0,222. DSC curves are different depending on the compositions. Samples with 10/20 mole % of EDM show Tg transition in the second heating cycle. In the first heating process sample 1-2 has only one exotermic peak, other samples with higher EDM content have two peaks, indicating cyclization and crosslinking. A copolymer with pendant groups has been synthetized via ST/HEMA copolymer (produced by using of 50-50 mole % feed). The modified copolymer was investigated by NMR and DSC measurements and found to be identical with sample 5.
