The phenomenon and effects of insulin imprinting, as well as the binding and fate of insulin given to Tetrahymena pyriformis were demonstrated. The insulin binding of Tetrahymena GL by gold labeled hormone with transmission electron microscope or after silver amplification of hormone-gold with scanning electron microscopy was visualized. The control group was compared to the insulin pretreated cells in 1 day and 1 week after 4 hours of imprinting and the internalization of hormone-gold was also investigated. A functional difference can be observed between the cilia of the oral and nonoral surfaces of Tetrahymena and hormonal imprinting has a specifying effect on the binding of the labeled hormone.
