Study of photoisomerization of azo dyes in liquid crystals

Abstract

The photoisomerization of azo dyes in liquid crystalline hosts was studied. It was shown that the parameters governing the isomerization process could be found from the polarized pump-probe transmission measurements. It was found that the dye order parameter for the trans isomer was relatively high and was strongly related to the liquid-crystalline order. The cis isomer showed a much lower dye order parameter and was not strongly dependent on the liquid-crystalline phase.
