Study of Closed Operation Modes of Batch Distillation Columns

Abstract

Open and non-conventional closed batch column operation modes were compared by rigorous simulation. The configurations studied were the batch rectifier (" two vessel column") and middle-vessel column (" three vessel column"). We simulated the separation of test mixtures (n-hexane-n-heptane and n-hexane-n-heptane-n-octane), and compared the recoveries of different methods under constant process duration. We proposed six different variants for the closed operation mode, which differ in the operation of the top (and in the case of middle-vessel column: bottom) vessel(s). The effects of the operational parameters were also studied. In case of negligible liquid hold-up, closed operation of batch rectifier provided better recoveries by 1.7-6%. However, the open operation mode of middle-vessel column proved to be better than the closed ones in every case.
