Structural features of magnetic fluids

The most of the recent results of research into the structure of various types of magnetic fluids on the nanometer level that uses SANS was investigated. A scientific session of the Physical Science Division of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS) was held on May 30, 2007 in the conference hall of the P N Lebedev Physical Institute, RAS. The main focus was given towards the study of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) which is used in the structure of various types of magnetic fluids. A SANS experiment analyzed the scattering of neutrons by inhomogeneities with sizes varying from 1 to 100 nm. The nuclear and magnetic scattering components was directly separated by using small-angle scattering of polarized neutrons. The experiments with magnetic nanoparticles showed that their specific magnetization is decreased as the nanoparticles get smaller.
