Status report on electron screening

Abstract

The results of systematic experimental studies of electron screening effects on the cross section of low energy fusion reactions are given. The systems studied up to now are d + d; 3He + d; 6,7Li + p; 6Li + d; 10,11B + p. The investigation of the 9Be + p process is in progress. The electronic character of the effect is shown both by its isotopic independence and by its change with the atomic (3He + d) or molecular (D + 3He) state of the interacting partners. The effect is highly underestimated by theoretical calculations, the most significant ones of which are briefly discussed.
