Abstract

Based on phytoplankton samples taken daily in Lake Balaton, this paper quantifies temporal scales relevant to phytoplankton population changes and assesses the importance of disturbances in maintaining diversity; introduces the term "minimal volume' and in this way estimates the meanings of frequentness and rarity when applied to phytoplankton; and introduces the term "ecological memory', outlining its implications in such issues as convergence and divergence in succession. -from Author
