Paramagnetic H2Co(PPh3)3 and Co(N2)(PPh3)3 were prepared from cobaltous acetylacetonate and diethyl aluminium ethoxide in H2 or N2 atmosphere, respectively. H2Co(PPh3)3 reacts reversibly with N2 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure to yield Co(N2)(PPh3)3. Both complexes are transformed by carbon monoxide to Co2(CO)2(PPh3)6. H2Co(PPh3)3 hydrogenates n-heptene-1 in a stoichiometric reaction to n-heptane.
