Abstract

The surfaces of the alloys Al-4%Cu-0.5%Si and Al-4.5%Cu-1.0%Si have been laser beam remelted while particles of TiC and WC were added. The resulting structures were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The most striking difference between both sorts of particles is the following: TiC particles do not penetrate the oxide layer on the surface of the sample and are agglomerated at the surface of the sample while WC particles are not hindered by the oxide layer and will be embedded in the remelted zone. This singnificant difference is caused by differences of the density and, hence, by differences in the kinetic energy while impinging at the surface of the sample. Furthermore, WC particles were partially dissolved in the melt leading to a precipitation of fine W2C particles.
