Abstract

Purpose: We investigated the presence of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) on lacrimal gland of rats. Methods: Interior and exterior of lacrimal glands were removed bilaterally in each animal. Mean SLI was studied by radioimmunoassay, immunohistochemistry and chromatographic analysis. Results: SLI had been found positive in interior lacrimal gland, but negative exterior. The mean ± SEM SLI was 0.17 ± 0.03 pg/L in interior lacrimal gland. No SLI could be demonstrated by immunohistochemical analysis in specimens that have been taken from lacrimal gland. Chromatographic profile did not obtain sharp peak of immunoreactive of somatostatin (SMS), but lacrimal gland contains SLI. Conclusion: These results suggest that the peptide can play a role in this gland functions.
