Solvent effects on i.r. bending frequency of NH2 and on stretching frequency of CS groups of primary thioamides and related compounds

Abstract

Infrared frequencies of NH2 symmetrical in-plane bending (βsNH2) and CS stretching (νCS) bands of primary thioamides, thiourea and thiosemicarbazides have been measured in various solvents. The slope of the BHW plot of βsNH2 bands has been related with the proton donor ability of the compounds. A non-linear relationship has been found between Kagiya's R-values and the relative frequency shifts. νCS bands show small frequency shifts. These frequencies are lower in more polar solvents, due to the dipolar form of thioamides.
