Soft mode and clusters in a model (one-dimensional) for displacive phase transitions

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the soft-phonon mode frequency in a one-dimensional scalar ø4 -model is considered in the displacive limit. The self-consistent description for the cluster walls and lattice vibrations with the account of the kink-phonon and phonon-phonon interactions is given in the framework of the variational method for the free energy. It is shown that the soft-mode frequency increases as T → Tc (= 0).
