Slow electrons in relaxing dipolar media

Abstract

Moderation, geminate recombination and solvation of low energy electrons in dipolar systems are discussed with a view to the dielectric relaxation of the medium. Earlier theories are summarized and compared with more recent experimental findings. The principal issues to be tackled are whether the continuum description of the dielectric properties of the medium is a reasonable approach and whether self-trapping is a tenable mechanism of electron localization. Finally a new model is outlined which consists in ion-electron pairs treated as hydrogen-like atoms embedded in a relaxing dipolar medium.
