Abstract

A municipal sewage treatment technology has been developed based on the recognition that (i) zeolite-containing powder (i.e. crushed zeolitic rock) of appropriate grain size added to waste water increases the biological activity of the sludge, (ii) removal of suspended solids is increased and (iii) the phosphate removal efficiency of trivalent cations (Fe3+, Al3+) is higher in the presence of zeolite. After biological treatment the remaining ammonium and dissolved or colloid organic substances can be removed in a column filled with zeolite (e.g. clinoptilolite) selective for ammonium ions.
