Simple method for the investigation of the high temperature plasticity of metallic materials

Abstract

The indentation creep test is a powerful and quick method for the investigation of the high temperature plasticity of various materials. During creep test a small cylindrical punch is pressed at constant loads into the surface of the sample and the penetration depth is registered as a function of testing time. On the basis of the creep curves taken at various temperatures and loads the strain rate sensitivity and the activation energy of the steady-state creep process can be determined. The main advantage of this test is that it needs only a small amount of testing material. In this paper the usefulness of this method illustrated by some results obtained on superplastic and non superplastic Al alloy. The indentation results are compared with tensile data obtained on the same materials.
