Abstract

In the early period of acute hepatitis the serum activity of the gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) exhibits only a slight rise; in comparison with the transaminase values this test is credited with little significance. Nevertheless, after normalisation of the GOT and GPT activity, higher GGTP values are found, just as in patients with protracted acute hepatitis. With reference to the authors' tests it is agreed that the curability of infectious hepatitis is better understood than by the customary test methods. The estimation of the GGTP can therefore be used as a screening test in posthepatitic treatment. The estimation of the GGTP can also be a valuable aid in the differential diagnosis of icterus.
