O'Connor et al. have demonstrated that hyperamylasemia and hyperlipasemia following endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) develop less frequently after the use of the non-ionic contrast medium iopamidol (Niopam®) than after the use of the ionic medium meglumide diastrizoate (urografin®). Niopam® is probably a safer contrast medium and its use can therefore be recommended.
